Built in 1885, the General Store building is rich with history. One of the oldest surviving buildings in Elk Grove, this store continuously housed a store of one sort or another as it passed from the original owners, the Hasman's, to the next owner, Smith and Welch.
Joseph Hasman built the store for his son, Charles. Charles originally operated a harness shop while living upstairs with his family. Unsatisfied by simply running a harness shop, in 1901, he expanded the business to include jewelry and other items, transforming the operations into a general mercantile store for the citizens of Elk Grove.
In 1915 Smith and Welch acquired the building where they continued to operate a general store while adding an insurance office upstairs. In 1934 the general store discontinued and the insurance office moved downstairs.
Marion Mix, a close friend of the Smiths, inherited the building in 1968. The property was turned over to a developer whose dream of turning the building into a restaurant was eventually realized by Frances and Duke Cahill in March of 1986. The Elk Grove Brewing Company acquired the building in April of 1995 and enhanced the restaurant by adding a working brewery.
In 2003 EGB&R was bought by Chris Correa and his wife Tammy, who are now happily running the business under their company, ChrisTam, Inc. Both have been working since the first brewery ownership while going to school. Tammy finished her MS in Nutritional Bio-Chemistry from U.C. Davis. She is the GM of the brewery and will remain so as she takes care of her husband due to health related issues. Chris has a BA in History and a BS in Viticulture from U.C. Davis and works as bartender. The attraction of the personal friends and patrons along with owning the business has made this a pleasurable and rewarding career for both with deep thanks to everyone who has supported the EGBR through the years.
